Can I drink sparkling water or clear soda with my trays in?

Many patients assume clear drinks are automatically safe for clear aligners. That's not always the case. If you use Invisalign® or another clear aligner orthodontic system, it's important to understand how certain beverages, even colorless ones, can affect both your trays and your teeth.

Stick to Water While Your Trays Are In

Plain water is the only beverage that's generally recommended while wearing your aligners. Other clear drinks, like sparkling water, flavored carbonated water, and clear sodas, contain varying levels of acid. Clear soda presents an additional concern because it contains sugar, giving cavity-causing bacteria even more fuel to produce harmful acids. When they become trapped beneath aligners, they remain in constant contact with the teeth, increasing the risk of enamel wear and tooth decay.

If you'd like to enjoy a sparkling beverage, simply remove your aligners first. Afterward, rinse your mouth with water, brush (if possible), before putting your trays back in.
