Frequently Asked Questions

TMJ pain refers to discomfort in the temporomandibular joints, which connect your jaw to your skull. These joints are complex and sensitive, and a variety of factors can contribute to TMJ disorders. Common causes include teeth grinding (bruxism), jaw clenching, misaligned teeth or bite, arthritis, joint injury, or even chronic stress. In many cases, the pain results from a combination of issues rather than a single source.

At Doug Booth, D.D.S. in Huntsville, we use advanced diagnostic tools to pinpoint the root cause of your TMJ discomfort. Digital imaging, bite analysis, and 3-D scanning enable us to obtain a clear picture of how your jaw functions, allowing us to recommend the most effective treatment.

Symptoms may include jaw pain, headaches, clicking or popping sounds, difficulty chewing, or limited jaw movement. Left untreated, TMJ issues can affect your quality of life and lead to more serious problems.

Our treatment plans are designed to relieve pain, restore function, and prevent future flare-ups. Options may include BOTOX® injections, custom oral appliances, bite adjustments, or minimally invasive therapies, all tailored to your needs.

Which Treatment is Right for You?

We start with an exam, imaging, and a conversation about your symptoms and your bite. From there we explain your options, which may include an oral appliance, BOTOX®, or a bite adjustment, and why we recommend the one we do.

Oral Appliances for Teeth Grinding

An oral appliance is a custom-fitted device worn over your teeth, usually at night, that protects them from grinding and can ease strain on the jaw. Dr. Pendley provides oral appliances for teeth grinding and TMJ.

How BOTOX® Works for TMJ

BOTOX® is a purified protein that temporarily relaxes the muscle it is placed in. For TMJ, we place small amounts in the masseter, the large muscle that closes your jaw and does most of the clenching and grinding. With that muscle relaxed, it works with less force, which can ease jaw soreness, tension headaches, and the strain on your teeth.
Many patients start to notice a difference within a couple of weeks, though results vary from person to person. The effect lasts about three to four months, so we check in with you before deciding on another visit.

As dentists, we work with the anatomy of the jaw every day. Dr. Pendley and Dr. Booth both offer BOTOX® for TMJ, and Dr. Booth is a certified BOTOX® provider.

Signs You May Need TMJ Treatment

Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a highly complex joint system that’s responsible for helping you chew, yawn, laugh, and comfortably eat food. When your TMJ is not healthy or functioning correctly, you suffer from TMD.

TMD can cause a wide range of uncomfortable symptoms, such as:

  • Jaw joint popping or clicking
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Frequent headaches and migraines
  • Jaw locking open or closed
  • Tooth clenching or grinding (bruxism)
  • Ringing of the ears (tinnitus)

BOTOX injections can provide temporary relief from some of the symptoms of TMD, such as clenching and grinding, TMJ pain, and headaches. If you are struggling with chronic headaches or jaw pain in Huntsville, BOTOX injections can provide the targeted relief you need. If you also struggle with snoring or sleep apnea, NightLase laser therapy may complement your TMJ treatment for a more restful night's sleep.

Why Choose Our Team for TMJ Treatment?

TMJ pain rarely has just one cause, so we start by looking at the whole picture: your jaw, your bite, and your teeth. Because we can treat grinding with an oral appliance or BOTOX®, we recommend what fits you, not just what we happen to offer. You will see Dr. Pendley or Dr. Booth for your evaluation, and we will walk you through your options and what each involves, including cost, before you decide.
